This element is alluded to in footnote 7, but is probably worth stressing since nowadays freedom of expression is frequently under threat from people who argue (especially in a religious context) that any minority opinion should be oppressed. This right aims for democratic societies with pluralism, tolerance and broad-mindedness.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nA dissenting opinion in the \u201cSpycatcher\u201d case pointed out long ago (pre-internet!) that in our information age, restricting information is increasingly ineffective. That makes it disproportionate and, thus, unnecessary.
