During her country mission to the United States of America, the Special Rapporteur on violence against women was informed of challenges related to the inadequate access to health services in prison and detention facilities, characterized by delays, neglect, and mistreatment of inmates and detainees. Patients with chronic health concerns complained of the long delays in seeing a doctor, intrusive body searches immediately upon their return from therapy, and regular indifference of staff to requests for special assistance. Mental illness may be both a cause and a consequence of imprisonment. Many of the women in custodial facilities in the US also face inadequate dental and mental health services. At the core of these health concerns is an inadequate system which is insufficiently responsive to gender-specific needs, including the reproductive health. In addition correctional facilities in the US increasingly charge fees for medical services, posing even more challenges for inmates and potentially discouraging them from seeking much needed medical assistance (A/HR/17/26/Add.5).
Comment added
In women’s institutions special accommodation should be made for pre-natal and post-care and treatment.
