Small numbers usually means fewer prisons for women and girls and greater distances from their homes and families. When this is compounded by inadequate transport facilities, communication, visiting provisions and discrimination in accessing resources, maintaining contact with family members and the outside world can be very difficult. During her visit to the United States, the UN Special Rapporteur on violence against women was informed that, despite access to telephones, the prohibitive cost of calls impeded inmates\u2019 possibilities to contact lawyers and families. Given the remoteness and geographical isolation of some of the detention facilities, telephone calls are often the only means for inmates and detainees to remain in contact with their family members. This was emphasized as a particular concern for women with minor children.
