Welcome to the OHCHR Glossary Project on Wiki!

Dear Colleagues,

We are using this platform to share and work with you on the revision of the definitions of the various glossary entries of human rights violations that are being developed by the Centre for Human Rights of the University of Pretoria, which is working with METS on this project.

As you know, the violations' glossary is developed in 2 formats:
  • condensed glossary: this will be an easily accessible tool installed in the OHCHR Human Rights Case Database with short definitions (max. 10-12 lines) enumerating the key elements that constitute a specific human rights violation

  • comprehensive glossary: this tool will be available in CD-rom and hard copy providing a detailed description of the violation and additional information (max. 650 words), including references to general comments, jurisprudence and examples, which database users can consult if more clarity is required. This tool will be made available not only to database users, but also to other OHCHR staff, and possibly other external stakeholders undertaking human rights monitoring and fact-finding.

What we expect from you...

We value your help and expertise to ensure that the final product is of high quality.

We need your help to review the draft entries posted in this wiki based and edit them to ensure accuracy of content, coherence and consistency in the way violations of IHRL and IHL are classified, as well as relevance and utility for end users.

Your valuable comments and suggestions will help to ensure that the Glossary Project meets your needs and expections and that of other colleagues involved in human rights monitoring, fact-finding and investigations.

The attached table, which will be updated regularly, contains useful information about the entries, including deadlines for review. Please note that we are receiving the glossary entries in batches. We will notify you as new entries are uploaded.

How to improve the entries?

  • Modify a definition: From the menu on your left, navigate to the text of the broad category (e.g. detention), then click on the specific definition you wish to review (e.g. arbitrary detention) until the definition is displayed on your screen. You can also access all available definitions through the Index Page. Once you are in the page of the definition you wish to modify, click on the "edit" button (top right of page) to modify its content. If you save it, your edited version will now appear on the screen. This function replaces the "track changes" function we normally use in Word documents. Please do not make any changes on the layout of the pages, as we want to keep some consistency in the definitions at this stage. Should you have suggestions on how to improve the layout or presentation, do so in the "discussion" page.

  • Keep track of all modified versions: if you wish to see the original entry text or the changes made by other colleagues commenting on the same definition, click on the tab "history" in the page corresponding to the entry you are reviewing. The system will show in chronological order all the changes made by each user with the corresponding edited text. You can also compare two different versions and the modifications will appear in colour . Should you experience problems visualising the modifications in colour, click on the "compatibility botton" on your browser bar (the one at the left of the refresh botton) and the colours should display.

  • Comment on a definition: if you wish to make a comment to a particular definition, in that page click on the tab "discussion" and post your observations, queries or anything else relating to that entry. For instance you could explain why you have modified a particular entry or deleted a legal reference that you think was inaccurate. It will help us and the other reviewers to understand why you made some changes or to start a discussion on a particular issue. Other reviewers can post a reply or add other comments on the same entry.

  • Get e-mail notifications of changes: if you wish to be notified by e-mail of changes made by others to entries of interest to you, click on the tab "notify me" in the page of your interest and tick that you want to be alerted on page edits (amendments in a violation text) and/or on page discussions (comments made on a specific violation).

Should you need further guidance on how to use this Wiki, do not hesitate to contact Cristina (cmichels@ohchr.org) or Juan (jnunez@ohchr.org).

Many thanks and we look forward to your contributions!
Your METS colleagues
